BITCOIN, EXPLAINED IN SMALLER PARTS
What Is a Satoshi? How Many Satoshis Are in a Bitcoin?
A satoshi, often shortened to “sat,” is one hundred-millionth of a Bitcoin. There are 100,000,000 satoshis in one BTC.
Can you buy half a Bitcoin? Yes—half a Bitcoin is 0.5 BTC, or 50 million satoshis. Our introductory guide explains how fractions work.
A satoshi is a unit of Bitcoin
Think of metres and centimetres: different units describe the same length. BTC and sats describe the same Bitcoin balance at different scales. Unlike the 100 cents in a dollar, a whole Bitcoin contains 100 million satoshis.
If your account displays 0.0001 BTC, you have 10,000 sats. Switching the display to sats does not create a second asset, multiply your purchasing power or change who controls the funds. It only changes how the balance is written.
This is why the price of a whole coin does not establish the minimum you must spend. A provider can sell a fraction. Its own order rules, payment costs and eligibility checks determine whether a particular small purchase is possible.

How many satoshis are in one Bitcoin?
Half a Bitcoin is 50 million sats. One hundredth is one million sats. You can multiply a BTC balance by 100,000,000 to express it in sats, or divide sats by that number to return to BTC. These unit conversions do not depend on an exchange rate.
Bitcoin balances on this calculator stop at eight BTC decimal places. A single sat is written as 0.00000001 BTC. All eight places matter: 0.0000001 BTC, with seven decimal places, is ten sats.

How much is a satoshi worth?
Its money value moves with Bitcoin’s price. At a purely hypothetical $100,000 per BTC, one sat would be $0.001, or one tenth of a US cent. The same sat would have a different value at a different BTC price.
A display that rounds every money amount to two decimals can make a non-zero satoshi value look like $0.00. Our calculator shows more precision for small outputs. Use it to compare amounts, and remember that the displayed value excludes fees.

Bitcoin’s divisibility allows a one-satoshi unit, but an exchange does not have to sell an order that small. A provider may have separate minimums for funding an account, placing a trade and withdrawing Bitcoin. Meeting one minimum does not establish that you meet the other two.
Moving one satoshi on-chain may also be impractical. A transfer needs to satisfy the sending service’s rules and the network’s transaction policies, and the transaction fee can be far larger than the value being moved. Divisibility alone is not a promise that a tiny withdrawal will work.
For an ordinary first purchase, compare the total cost and BTC credit at your actual budget. A larger number of sats is not automatically a better deal if the cash debit also increases.
Sats, Bitcoin and SATS tokens
Bitcoin is the asset. A satoshi is a small unit of that asset. SATS can also appear as the name or ticker of unrelated tokens. Similar labels are not evidence that the underlying asset or network is the same.
Satoshi Nakamoto is the name used by Bitcoin’s creator. It is also the name from which “satoshi” is derived. You do not need to buy a separate “Satoshi coin” to hold a Bitcoin fraction. Check the asset name, ticker BTC and supported network before confirming an order.
How people buy and use satoshis
Buying sats normally means buying a small BTC balance through an eligible provider. You might leave that balance in a custodial account or move it to a compatible wallet after considering costs and responsibilities. Both approaches involve risks.
Some wallets show balances in sats because whole-number units are easier to read for small amounts. Other services use BTC by default. Check the unit label carefully when copying a figure between services; 10,000 sats and 10,000 BTC are very different amounts.
Start with the tutorial for the purchase process, then use the relevant country guide for local checks. If you decide not to buy, you can still learn the units and use the calculator without opening an account.
